Qualifying Life Events (QLE)
Outside of the annual open enrollment period, you can only make changes to your benefits if you experience a Qualifying Life Event.
What is a Qualifying Life Event?
A QLE is a major life change that allows you to enroll in, change, or cancel benefits outside the normal enrollment period.
Common Qualifying Life Events
Family Status Changes
- Marriage or domestic partnership
- Divorce or legal separation
- Birth or adoption of a child
- Death of spouse or dependent
- Child gaining or losing dependent status
Employment Changes
- Change from part-time to full-time (or vice versa)
- Spouse gains or loses employer coverage
- Unpaid leave of absence (FMLA, personal)
- Return from leave of absence
Coverage Changes
- Loss of coverage from another source
- Becoming eligible for Medicare or Medicaid
- Change in residence (different state/coverage area)
Cost or Coverage Changes
- Significant cost increase in coverage
- Loss of provider network
- Plan changes by employer
How to Report a Qualifying Life Event
- Log into UKG within 30 days of the life event
- Navigate to Benefits: Click 'Benefits' > 'Change Benefits'
- Select Life Event: Choose the type of event that occurred
- Enter Event Date: Provide the exact date the event occurred
- Upload Documentation: Attach required supporting documents
- Make Changes: Enroll, change, or cancel benefits as needed
- Review and Submit: Confirm changes and submit
Required Documentation
You must provide proof of the qualifying event:
- Marriage: Marriage certificate
- Divorce: Divorce decree or legal separation papers
- Birth: Birth certificate or hospital record
- Adoption: Adoption papers or placement documents
- Death: Death certificate
- Loss of Coverage: Termination letter from previous insurer
- Medicare: Medicare card
Time Limits
- Reporting Deadline: 30 days from date of event
- Coverage Effective Date: Typically the date of the event
- Late Submissions: After 30 days, you must wait until next open enrollment
What Changes Can You Make?
Changes must be consistent with the qualifying event:
Marriage/Birth/Adoption
- Add spouse or child to coverage
- Enroll in new coverage if previously waived
- Change to family coverage tier
- Enroll in dependent care FSA
Divorce/Legal Separation
- Remove spouse from coverage
- Change to employee-only or employee+child coverage
- Modify FSA contributions
Loss of Coverage
- Enroll in any available plan
- Add affected dependents
- Increase coverage level
Special Considerations
Newborns
- Automatically covered for first 31 days after birth
- Must add to your plan within 30 days for continued coverage
- Mother's coverage used for delivery
Adoption
- Coverage begins date of placement
- Include legal adoption documents
- May be eligible for adoption assistance benefits
Medicare
- Notify BetterHealth when you or spouse enrolls in Medicare
- Medicare becomes primary coverage (age 65+)
- BetterHealth plan becomes secondary
- May change or drop BetterHealth coverage
